Summer is the traveling time - car jaunts to picnic areas, to visit aunts and uncles in neighboring cities, trips to the beach, long and short plane hops to relatives and scenic vistas. Along with the pleasures of being with family or in a beautiful, peaceful place, comes the hassles of the actual trip. Packing the kids and their toys and their special 'blankies' is one concern, and the other is the fact of motion-sickness. There are several techniques to deal with all forms of car, air or sea sickness and some can actually be used for morning sickness or the discomfort of a flu-type of nausea.
Here's what you do:
First technique: Place one hand across your forehead (or the child's) and the other hand on the mastoid process which is just behind the ear. Hold these two points till the feeling passes. The ear is involved in balance and the forehead is involved with stress reduction.
Second method: Hold your left hand so the palm faces you. Partially close your right hand so the fingers are bent. Now use the backs of your fingers of the right hand, (meaning the back of your nails) to stroke the left hand from the knuckles to the wrist. Continue doing this till the feeling subsides.
Third mode: Take a piece of paper - any kind of paper from paper towel to copy paper or brown paper bag. (Paper towel is the least noisy and covers a large area). Place the paper on the bare skin of your abdomen - where the queasiness seems to stem from. Leave it there. Within moments the nausea will disappear. Some people report a cool feeling - like peppermint in their stomach.
Fourth way: You can actually sit the person in question on a newspaper and it will prevent the sick feeling. I used the last method and the nail stroke on my dog. She was a car-sick malamute. The only way to get her to the Vet was to sit her on paper and nail stroke her HANDS (front paws) You only need to do this to one hand or one paw, not necessary to do both sides. The nail stroke was the method of choice when I went whale-watching on a blustery sea.
Good luck, happy traveling and let me know your results.
